What Is Sycamore Counseling Services? (And Why We're Different)
If you've driven down Broadway in Paducah recently, you might have noticed the name. Maybe a friend mentioned it. Maybe you typed "counseling near me" into a search bar at 11pm when things felt heavier than usual. However you found us, we're glad you're here.
Sycamore Counseling Services opened its doors in November 2024 with a simple but deep conviction: people deserve a place where they can heal wholly, not just manage symptoms or survive the week, but actually grow into the people they were created to be.
This is our story, and more importantly, an invitation into yours.
Why "Sycamore"?
The sycamore tree shows up in a quiet corner of the Gospel of Luke. Zacchaeus climbs one just to catch a glimpse of Jesus. It's not a glamorous story. The Sycamore is easily missed. This man is small in stature, not exactly liked in town, up in a tree hoping not to be noticed. And yet, Jesus stops. Looks up. Calls him by name. And that moment in time is a turning point in the life of Zaccheus.
That moment of being truly seen when you didn't expect it is at the heart of what we do. Counseling, at its best, is about being genuinely known. Not categorized, not rushed through a symptom checklist, but truly seen. I named my practice after that tree because we believe everyone deserves that kind of encounter.
Who We Are
Sycamore Counseling Services is a private-pay, faith-integrated group practice located in downtown Paducah. We are founded and led by Shelby-Rhea Miller, LPCC, and our growing team of licensed clinicians provides high-quality, personalized therapy to individuals, couples, and families.
"Faith-integrated" doesn't mean we only see church members, or that every session involves Scripture and prayer. It means we believe human beings are more than their behaviors and brain chemistry. We hold space for the spiritual dimension of who you are, your sense of meaning, your relationship with God, your questions about purpose without forcing it or ignoring it.
You bring your whole self to counseling. We think that's exactly right.
What Makes Us Different
We operate as an out-of-network practice, which means we don't partner directly with insurance. We know that raises an immediate question. We'll address the full "why" in an upcoming post, but the short version is this: it allows us to give you more. More time. More flexibility. More focus on what you actually need, not what a benefits manager has approved.
Our sessions are 50 minutes, our rates are transparent, and our clinicians are carefully selected not just for their credentials but for their character. We genuinely believe that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most powerful factors in whether counseling works so we invest in people who know how to be present with you.
We also believe in the whole person. Mental health doesn't exist in isolation from your physical health, your relationships, your faith, and your sense of purpose. Our approach reflects this whether we're working through anxiety, a painful relationship pattern, trauma, or a season of grief.
Our Tagline — And What It Actually Means
"Restoring. Renewing. Rooted in hope."
Restoring: Healing often involves getting something back. A sense of self. A relationship. The capacity to feel joy.
Renewing: Growth isn't just recovery. It's becoming. Many people come to counseling not in crisis but in transition, ready to do the deeper work of becoming who they've always wanted to be.
Rooted in hope: We've seen what happens when people finally get the right support. Things change. Not overnight, not without effort, but genuinely, lastingly. We've built this practice on the belief that hope is not naive. It's well-founded.
